Having been in the Finance profession for >15 years, I’ve always believed that financial literacy start from young. And Pri 1 is the best time to start cultivating good financial sense.⁣
⁣
Here are 4 tips for you to help your child learn how to manage his own pocket money (more details in the video):⁣
⁣
1️⃣ Give him a weekly allowance at the start of every week, instead of a daily allowance everyday.⁣
⁣
2️⃣ Give him a combination of notes and coins.⁣
⁣
3️⃣ Teach him how to keep a record of his daily savings.⁣
⁣
4️⃣ Provide the child motivation for savings.⁣
For eg, he gets to spend 10% of his yearly savings on anything he wants!⁣

𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐥𝐲, 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐢 𝐒𝐜𝐡, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝.⁣

I know some schools allow the students to pay for food with a card. I highly discourage that. At this very young age, they need to understand the concept of money. When they do not physically and visually see the money going out of their pockets, they do not understand the impact of spending and saving.⁣

𝘐𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘳 𝟸 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘥𝘰 𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘰𝘴. 𝘐𝘯 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝟷, 𝘐 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘰 𝘗𝘳𝘪 𝘚𝘤𝘩, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘗𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝟸 𝘵𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬.

My #1 pro-tip for empowering the child to manage their homework and after-school hours independently is:⁣⁣

➡️ 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫-𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐥𝐞!⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Once the child gets used to his schedule, you no longer need to nag/remind/scold for him to put in the study hours needed.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
➡️ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
For eg, say “play the piano” instead of “practice the piano”. Say “engaged learning” instead of “study time”. Say “What’s your mission from school?” instead of “What’s your homework from school?”. Say “Have you completed all your missions?” instead of “Have you completed all your homework?”⁣⁣

➡️ 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐚 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨𝐨. ⁣⁣

As obvious as this is, it is often neglected. Kids are expected to study on cluttered tables, or on dining tables of non-ideal height, or in the living room where there’re many other distracting activities going on.⁣⁣

A good study environment consists of:⁣⁣
- a table without clutter⁣⁣
- a table at the right height⁣⁣
- good lighting⁣⁣
- a study area without distractions (such as a bed or toys in sight etc)⁣⁣

Entering Primary School is a huge transition for kids as young as 6 years old, and it can be very overwhelming and scary for them.⁣
⁣
Here are 5 tips to help you and your child with the transition:⁣
⁣
1️⃣ 𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝.⁣
Remember to validate her emotions. You were once in her position, and you know how nerve-wrecking it can be to start Pri Sch!⁣
⁣
2️⃣ 𝐅𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠.⁣
It’s very different from what she is used to in Childcare or Kindergarten.⁣

3️⃣ 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬.⁣

4️⃣ 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭.⁣
Reminder: DO NOT pack your child’s bag for her! Empower her to pack her bag independently by using the packing list.⁣

5️⃣ 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞.⁣
Share with her how short 5 mins is (time taken to go to the toilet), and how long an hour is (eg 2 episodes of Paw Patrol). It will help her understand what to expect for an hour long lesson, or when the teacher says “5 more mins!”.⁣

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝'𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫.⁣

Any behaviours or actions or values which you want your child to exhibit, you have to model them for him or her first.⁣
⁣
Don't want your child to yell at you when she's angry? Then don't yell at her when you're angry.⁣
⁣
Don't want your child to hit her friends? Then don't spank her.⁣
⁣
Don't want your child to talk rudely to you? Then be respectful when talking to her too.⁣
⁣
Don't want your child to whine for screen time all the time? Then put away your devices whenever you can.⁣
⁣
Children mimic the adults around them all the time. The best way to teach a child, is to model it.⁣
⁣
And the best way to model it, is to work on yourself first.⁣
⁣
